Students in a government school classroom in Kunnathunad filling in the survey

Evaluating an education programme that reached over 12,000 students in 21 government schools, to guide its second phase.

The programme

The S.L.A.T.E Kunnathunad Vidyajyothi project, funded by BPCL, worked across 21 government schools in Kunnathunad constituency. It reached over 12,000 students and hundreds of teachers, aiming to improve learning, support teachers and make the public school system work better together.

What we did

As S.L.A.T.E’s RAAR (Review, Audit, Analysis and Research) team, we led the evaluation from start to finish: designing the tools, planning data collection, running the fieldwork and analysing the results.

We used a pre and post design with surveys, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, building a separate instrument for each part of the programme with the partner delivering it. A student RAAR team from St. Teresa’s College helped manage surveys and enter data.

What came of it

We presented the baseline findings to S.L.A.T.E and its partners, followed by a full impact evaluation report with:

  • recommendations for improving and scaling the programme
  • project management and monitoring insights
  • suggestions for education policy at block and district level

S.L.A.T.E and its partners used the findings to plan the programme’s second phase.
