Preparing college volunteers to mentor tribal students in Kerala's Model Residential Schools.

Why

THRIVE (Tribal Higher Education and Interactive Ventures for Excellence) is KYLA’s flagship project. It works to close gaps in attitude and aptitude among tribal students in Kerala’s Model Residential Schools (MRS). About 50 college volunteers are chosen for each MRS in a district, to work closely with the students as mentors.

What we did

KYLA asked us to lead the career development part of the volunteers’ training. We designed three modules:

  • Understanding personality, attitude and self-awareness
  • Skills and opportunities for the future
  • Building a resume and using LinkedIn

The training paired self-reflection with practical tools, so volunteers could think about their own goals while learning how to guide others. We focused on communication, career orientation and a growth mindset.

What came of it

The training worked on two levels. MRS students gained mentors and exposure, and the volunteers built their own skills in facilitation, leadership and career planning. Many said they left more confident and clearer about their purpose.
