Training for more than 150 Anganwadi teachers and the facilitators of 43 community learning centres, to close learning gaps early.
Why
Our learning assessment at MRS Malampuzha showed that tribal students fall behind early, and that the gap leads to dropouts later. Two things were missing: strong early childhood education, and learning support outside the classroom. So we went to where learning begins.
What we did
With the District Administration of Palakkad and the Aspirational Blocks Programme, we ran two pieces of training in the tribal block of Attappady.
Anganwadi teachers. A one-day training at Kottathara for more than 150 teachers covered building positive classroom cultures, structures that support learning, reading habits, curiosity, and using games and stories to develop children’s thinking and social skills. Teachers also prepared individual learning plans for their Anganwadis.
Community learning centre facilitators. We trained the facilitators of all 43 Samoohya Padana Muris (community learning centres) in Attappady to build a learning culture, assess reading and numeracy, and design activities to strengthen basic skills. We also prepared them to widen children’s aspirations and connect them to the world outside.
What came of it
Together, the two trainings aim to have tribal children ready for school and supported beyond it, in one of Kerala’s most underserved regions.
